Brief Industry Overview
The Agriculture and Fisheries sector plays an important role in diversifying the economy of the Sultanate of Oman. The government’s economic development policy emphasizes the expansion of non-oil sectors, one being the agriculture and fisheries sector.
The Sultanate is classified as one of the best in the world with minimal customs tariff. Contribution of agricultural sector on the gross domestic product (GDP) during the year 2016 reached about 1.13%. Fisheries sector contribute to economic and social stability as well as its contribution to job creation and contribution to GDP and provide fish products valued at one-third of the needs of the Sultanate of food. Oman endowed with the coastline of 3,165 km and about 533,180 km2of EEZ occupy a unique position. It is the second in supporting the national economy after the oil and gas sector and has become a dynamic sector of food industry. The ultimate outcomes indicate that Oman is achieving a promising growth rate of both crop and livestock sectors, attained at 6%.
About Agro Food Oman 2018
The Second Agro-Food Oman - Agriculture, Fisheries & Food Exhibition along with the World Halal Food Assembly will be held from the 7-9 May 2018 at Oman Convention & Exhibition
Centre (OCEC). The expo aims to link the sector as well as the related government organizations with industry experts and suppliers by sharing innovative ideas and solutions to transform the sector, showing the potential involved toward its contribution to the Sultanates growing economy.
The 2017 edition featured over 95 companies locally and internationally, including countries from Iran, India, Italy, Turkey, The Netherlands, Denmark, South Africa, Ethiopia, Sri Lanka and many more. World Halal & Food Assembly Oman, a two day conference will be held along the Agro-Food Oman Exhibition on the 8 & 9 May. The conference will feature top international & local speakers from the sector to share their knowledge and discuss on the various challenges faced by the industry.
